IBC totes and flexitanks both serve the bulk liquid transport market, but they address different segments. Understanding when each option makes sense can save significant logistics costs and improve supply chain efficiency.
What Is a Flexitank?
A flexitank is a large, single-use flexible bag (typically 16,000 to 24,000 liters / 4,200 to 6,300 gallons) that fits inside a standard 20-foot shipping container. The bag is loaded, filled with liquid, shipped, emptied at destination, and discarded. Flexitanks are used primarily for single-origin, single-destination bulk liquid shipments.
Capacity and Scale
A single flexitank holds the equivalent of approximately 58-87 IBC totes (275 gal each). For large, single-shipment volumes of 4,000+ gallons, flexitanks offer dramatically lower cost per gallon for shipping. However, they require the full volume to be available at once and consumed at once — there is no partial emptying and continuing transit.
IBC totes offer divisibility: a truckload of 48-56 IBCs can be split among multiple customers, stored in various locations, and dispensed over time. For distribution-style logistics where the final delivery involves many smaller drops, IBCs are far more practical.
Cost Comparison
For a single point-to-point shipment of 5,000+ gallons of a non-hazardous liquid, flexitanks typically cost 20-40% less per gallon than IBC shipping. The savings come from eliminating the container cost (the bag is cheap) and maximizing container utilization.
For volumes below 4,000 gallons, split shipments, or multi-destination logistics, IBCs are more cost-effective because they eliminate the need for specialized filling and emptying equipment, work with standard material handling equipment, and can be staged, stored, and moved independently.
Reusability
This is where IBC totes have a clear sustainability advantage. Flexitanks are single-use and must be disposed of after one trip. IBC totes can be used 5-7 times before reconditioning is needed. For companies with sustainability goals, the reusable nature of IBC totes is a significant consideration.
When to Choose Each
Choose flexitanks for: large single-shipment volumes (5,000+ gallons), point-to-point international shipping, non-hazardous liquids with standard viscosity, and situations where return logistics for empty containers are impractical.
Choose IBC totes for: volumes under 4,000 gallons, multi-destination distribution, hazmat or food-grade applications, situations requiring long-term storage before use, and operations with sustainability requirements.
