Our 8-Step Reconditioning Process
Every IBC tote we sell is reconditioned to a documented, repeatable standard. This is not a rinse-and-ship operation — it is a full industrial rehabilitation process performed by trained technicians.
Incoming Inspection
Every IBC tote arriving at our facility undergoes a thorough visual and structural inspection. Technicians assess the cage for damage, check the bottle for cracks or brittleness, document prior contents using residue analysis, and assign an initial grade classification. Units with unacceptable contamination or structural damage are rejected at this stage.
Contents Documentation & Hazard Assessment
We record the prior contents of every unit using SDS sheets, label verification, and residue testing where applicable. This step is critical for worker safety and determines the appropriate cleaning protocol. Units that previously held hazardous, reactive, or incompatible materials are segregated and processed under specific safety protocols.
Triple Rinse & Pre-Wash
The IBC bottle undergoes a triple-rinse process using high-pressure hot water to remove bulk residue. Rinse water is collected and processed through our wastewater treatment system in compliance with EPA discharge regulations. This pre-wash stage removes approximately 90% of residual contents before the primary cleaning cycle begins.
Hot Caustic Steam Clean
Units are subjected to a high-temperature caustic cleaning cycle using food-grade detergents and steam at temperatures exceeding 180°F. The cleaning agent penetrates micro-surface textures in the HDPE to remove chemical residues, biofilms, and stubborn deposits. The cycle is timed to industry standards with temperature monitoring throughout.
Final Rinse & pH Neutralization
Following the caustic wash, the interior undergoes a thorough final rinse cycle with purified water. pH testing confirms neutralization of all cleaning agents. For food-grade applications, a food-safe sanitizer rinse is applied as a final step. Rinse water samples are retained for quality records.
Component Replacement
All valves, gaskets, seals, and caps are removed and replaced with new OEM-equivalent components. Grade A units receive new butterfly valves with new EPDM gaskets and new 6-inch fill caps. Grade B units receive new gaskets and inspected valves. This step ensures no leakage paths exist from degraded sealing components.
Pressure Testing & Leak Verification
Every reconditioned IBC tote is hydrostatically pressure tested to 1.5 times its rated working pressure in accordance with UN certification requirements. Units are also subjected to an air-pressure drop test over a timed hold period. Any unit that fails either test is returned for re-inspection or removed from inventory.
Final Inspection, Grading & Certification
A senior quality technician conducts a final comprehensive inspection covering bottle clarity, cage straightness, valve function, cap seal, label readability, pallet condition, and overall appearance. The unit is assigned its final grade, marked with our reconditioning date and batch number, and — where applicable — issued its DOT/UN 31HA1 certification documentation.
Quality Assurance
Our QA program is built on measurable, documented standards — not guesswork. Every unit leaves our facility with a full inspection record attached.
Batch Tracking
Each IBC tote is assigned a unique batch number linking it to its full reconditioning record: who processed it, when, what cleaning cycle was used, and what components were replaced. Records retained for 5 years.
Hydrostatic Pressure Testing
Every unit is filled and pressurized to 1.5x working pressure. No exceptions. Pressure gauges are calibrated quarterly. Any unit that drops pressure during the hold period is immediately rejected.
Residue Analysis
For high-sensitivity applications, we offer pre-shipment residue testing using wipe samples or water extraction analysis. Results are documented and provided with the order.
Two-Stage Visual Inspection
Units are visually inspected at intake and again after reconditioning by different technicians. This dual-check system catches defects that a single reviewer might miss.
Valve Flow Testing
All replacement valves are flow-tested after installation. We verify full open and full close function, check handle alignment, and confirm the outlet thread is undamaged before shipment.
Calibrated Equipment
All pressure gauges, thermometers, pH meters, and measuring equipment used in our QA process are on a documented calibration schedule compliant with ISO 9001 principles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between reconditioned and refurbished IBC totes?
The terms are often used interchangeably in the industry, but at IBC Recycling Solution, reconditioned means a documented, multi-step process that includes cleaning, component replacement, pressure testing, and re-certification. A refurbished container at some suppliers may mean nothing more than a rinse. Always ask for the specific process steps when evaluating any supplier.
Are reconditioned IBC totes safe for food-grade products?
Grade A reconditioned IBC totes can be used for food-grade applications when the prior contents were food-safe and the unit passes our full cleaning and inspection protocol. The HDPE bottle material itself is FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant. We recommend requesting residue testing documentation for food applications. Grade B and C are not recommended for direct food contact.
How long does the DOT/UN certification last on a reconditioned IBC?
Under 49 CFR 180.352, reconditioned IBC totes certified for hazardous material transport must be retested every 2.5 years. The certification date is marked on the unit. We issue certification documentation with every DOT/UN certified tote, and our batch tracking system lets you verify the certification date and process records.
Can I mix grades in a single order?
Yes. Many customers order a mix — for example, Grade A totes for sensitive chemicals and Grade C for non-critical water storage. Just specify your desired quantity for each grade in the quote request, and we will confirm availability and provide pricing for each.
What did the container previously hold?
We document prior contents for every unit when the information is available (label, SDS, shipper documentation). For Grade A and certified units, this information is included in the batch record. We do not sell units whose prior contents are unknown or that previously held materials incompatible with future uses without disclosure. Ask about prior contents when placing your order.
Do you offer net payment terms?
Yes. We offer Net-30 terms to qualified businesses with approved credit applications. New customers typically start on prepayment (ACH, wire, or credit card) for the first 1-2 orders, after which we can establish a credit account. Contact our sales team to begin the credit application process.
What is the minimum order quantity?
There is no formal minimum — we have sold single units to small farms and 500-unit contracts to industrial distributors. However, freight economics make orders of 4+ units more cost-efficient on a per-unit basis. For single units, will-call pickup is often the most economical option.
Can you deliver to a residential address?
Yes, with some limitations. Residential delivery requires a liftgate truck and typically incurs an additional delivery fee. The totes will be placed at ground level at the truck rear — you will need a way to move them from there. Contact us to discuss your site access situation and we will find a workable solution.
