~275 gal

Water storage or rainwater collection capacity per unit

HDPE Is Durable, Not Brittle

High-density polyethylene does not degrade or become brittle in normal outdoor use. UV-stabilized IBC bottles can last 15–20 years in non-harsh outdoor conditions. Repurposing extends this lifecycle rather than ending it at first industrial use.

Steel Cage Longevity

Hot-dip galvanized steel cages resist corrosion for decades. When an IBC bottle reaches end of life, the cage can often be reused again — as a garden frame, equipment support, or combined with a new bottle.

Water Conservation Through Rainwater Harvesting

A single rain barrel IBC collecting rainfall from a standard roof area can capture 3,000–10,000 gallons per year depending on climate — offsetting municipal water use and reducing stormwater runoff.

Composting Closes the Organic Loop

Our IBC compost systems turn organic waste into soil amendment, keeping organic material out of landfill where it would generate methane, and returning nutrients to the soil where they belong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are IBC-derived products made from safe, food-grade materials?

The HDPE bottles used in IBC totes are manufactured from food-grade HDPE material (FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant). However, not all containers we repurpose previously held food-safe contents. For products like rain barrels and garden bed liners where the material contacts growing media (not food directly), any well-cleaned HDPE bottle is appropriate. For potable water applications, we specifically select and clean units that previously held food-grade or water contents. Always ask about prior contents if your application has sensitivity to this.

Can I specify what I want in a custom product?

Absolutely — custom specifications are the norm for this product line, not the exception. Tell us the height you want the raised bed cut to, exactly where you want the drain fitting on the compost bin, what outlet size you need on the livestock waterer, or what bulkhead configuration your aquaponics system requires. We work with you to build the product to your specification rather than forcing you into a one-size-fits-all solution.

What is the lifespan of a repurposed IBC tote product?

HDPE has an extremely long service life — 15 to 25 years in normal outdoor conditions when UV stabilized. The galvanized steel cage is similarly durable. Realistically, a repurposed IBC rain barrel or raised garden bed will outlast multiple generations of wooden alternatives. The limiting factor is usually UV exposure on unstabilized HDPE — we recommend UV-resistant coating or covers for any unit stored in direct sun year-round.

How do I clean and maintain an IBC rain barrel or water tank?

Annual maintenance is minimal. Rinse the interior with a garden hose through the fill opening at the start of each season. Remove any sediment or debris from the bottom. Check the inlet screen and clean any debris buildup. Inspect the spigot washer for wear and replace if dripping. For water quality, we recommend adding a small amount of food-grade hydrogen peroxide annually if the water is stored long-term without circulation.

Can IBC tote rain barrels be connected in series for more storage?

Yes — linking multiple IBC tote rain barrels in series is one of the most effective ways to increase storage capacity. Connect them via the overflow port with a hose or hard pipe, and all tanks fill sequentially. A system of four linked 275-gallon units gives you 1,100 gallons of rainwater capacity from a single downspout. We install appropriately sized overflow fittings on all rain barrel units to facilitate this configuration.

Do IBC pontoon floats work in saltwater?

Yes. HDPE is highly resistant to saltwater corrosion — significantly more so than steel or aluminum. The galvanized cage is adequate for occasional saltwater contact but will corrode over time in continuously submerged or saltwater-splash conditions. For permanent marine installations, we recommend painting the cage with marine-grade epoxy or specifying a stainless steel hardware upgrade. The HDPE bottle itself is fully saltwater compatible with no additional treatment.

What is your lead time for custom IBC-derived products?

Standard products like rain barrels and basic bulk storage tanks are typically ready in 2–5 business days. Custom modifications — precision height cutting, multiple fittings, access door installation, aquaponics full plumbing kits — typically require 5–10 business days. Rush builds may be accommodated for time-sensitive needs (disaster response, event deadlines, etc.) — contact us to discuss availability and any rush fees.

Have a Custom Idea?

If you can imagine it, we can probably build it from an IBC tote. Tell us about your project and our fabrication team will work with you to bring it to life.
